IMSA WeatherTech Championship – Update after Indy

Although none of the championships in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar series have been decided yet, the picture is coming into better focus after the wild 6-Hour TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks.

Victory at Indy. First win of the year for Cadillac

In GTP, on the manufacturer’s side, Petit Le Mans results will determine the winner. Porsche is currently on top and Acura is second, only 7 points behind. Whoever finishes ahead at Petit will be the champion. On the GTP driver’s side, the Porsche Penske duo of Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy are looking pretty good, with a 145-point lead over BMW drivers Philipp Eng and Dries Vanthoor.

LMP2 is still up in the air, with AO Racing driver’s PJ Hyett and Dane Cameron holding an 85-point lead over United Autosports driver Daniel Goldburg going into Petit. Winner takes all, if it comes down to it?

In GTD-PRO, it is still Chevrolet and Ferrari pilots battling for the driver’s title, with Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims with a slim 18-point margin over the Dragonspeed Ferrari driver Albert Costa. On the manufacturer’s side of GTD-PRO, Chevrolet leads Ferrari, Ford, BMW and Porsche – but all of the Chevy followers are still within striking distance of Corvette coming to the final round at Petit.

In GTD, AMG has a large lead in the manufacturer’s battle, but the driver’s championship is still up in the air, with Winward Racing pilots Russell Ward and Philip Ellis in first with Heart of Racing’s Casper Stevenson second and Kenton Koch sitting third. It is certainly quite a long shot, but if Kenton takes pole and the win and Winward finishes last in GTD…. well, stranger things in racing have happened, just saying.

It is going to be a fantastic finish to the season at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

We will be there, will you? See you there…
