IMSA WeatherTech Championship 2025 – Down to the Wire
By Jack Webster & Eddie LePine
There is a lot at stake this weekend at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Tirerack.com Battle on the Bricks. With only the 6-Hour endurance race at Indy and the 10-Hour Motul Petit Le Mans remaining on the 2025 IMSA schedule, championships in all four classes are still to be decided – and at this point, no championship (either manufacturer or driver) has been decided.
Currently sitting atop the GTP Driver’s Championship are Porsche Penske drivers Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet with 2314 points, followed closely by their teammates Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy with 2239 points. Team RRL BMW pilots Philipp Eng and Dries Vanthoor are in third, while Renger van der Zande and Nick Yelloy occupy fourth, piloting the MSR Acura.
On the manufacturers side in GTP, Porsche leads, followed by Acura, BMW and then Cadillac. Any of those manufacturers are still in the hunt for the championship with only the two endurance races remaining. A total of twelve GTP cars from manufacturers Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, Acura and Lamborghini are on hand at Indy and the same number should be at Motul Petit Le Mans.
In LMP2, it is the driving duo of Dane Cameron and PJ Hyett sitting in first place for AO Racing with fan favorite, Spike. A combination of great driving by PJ all season long and the brilliant addition of former Penske champion Cameron has been the right formula for the team all season long. They lead the Riley 74 Ranch ORECA of Daniel Goldburg, Felipe Frage and Gar Robinson by over 100 points going into the final two races.
In GTD-PRO, Chevrolet leads BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Porsche and Lamborghini in the manufacturer’s battle, with any of the top 6 still having a legitimate shot at the title.
On the driver’s side in the GTD-PRO championship Corvette drivers Antonio Garcia and Alexander Sims are at the top of the heap and consistent results in the final two races could secure the championship for them. Closely following the Corvette pair is Ferrari pilot Albert Costa, then Klaus Bachler and Laurin Heinrich for Porsche.
In the hotly contested GTD class, Mercedes is leading the way over Ferrari, Lexus, Aston Martin and Porsche. Again, any of those manufacturers could take the title, but right now with a margin of well over 100 points, one would have to favor AMG Mercedes.
AMG Mercedes pilots Philip Ellis and Russell Ward are currently in first place, while Lexus drivers Jack Hawksworth and Parker Thompson are second. Aston Martin driver Casper Stevenson is third and with excellent results after joining Triarsi Ferrari mid-season, Kenton Koch is fourth. Any of those drivers are still in contention for the GTD championship.
So, after a long season of racing that started at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, then the Twelve Hours of Sebring, followed by Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Watkins Glen and Road America it all comes to who can do the best at Indianapolis and Road Atlanta.
It has been a season of records – record crowds, record entries and record TV and internet audiences. In the final two races of 2025 we are sure more records will be broken.
Stay tuned.
